Mommy confessions in the kitchen.

Obviously I love my kids. I really do. They are adorable, funny, slightly crazy and the make my life entertaining. But...

I don't like cooking/baking with them.

Well at least 80% of the time I don't like it. If you look at most of my recipes posts you'll see that my kids or at least one of them, is always involved in the process. I don't do it to tug at your heart strings and have you say "awww! How cute! What a great Mom!" I do it because I can't escape them. I walk into the kitchen and they are like fruit flies on a banana. They. just. won't. leave.

Doing everything with children in the kitchen takes a million times longer. The mess is always way bigger. They fight over who gets to put the flour in the bowl. They are impatient. They lick things.

Just once it would be nice to cook or bake by myself. To have some peace and quiet in the kitchen. I've tried keeping them busy with other things. I've tried locking them in closets. (ok, so I haven't actually tried it, I've just day dreamed about it.) They are like staticy (is that a word?) pants. Clingy.

For now I grin and bare it. I'm sure one day they will want nothing to do with me and my kitchen and I will miss it. But it's ok to bitch and moan, right?

  1. I hate cooking/baking with Jayla in the kitchen. Only once in awhile do I let her in there to help. I'm just really anal about my kitchen and it's too small to have her in there too.

    1. Ours isn't small, so I can't use that excuse. They cozy right up to the counter and stare at me.

  2. This actually made me laugh out loud! I was never one to want to cook with my mum and even now I hate cooking, but thank god my son is only 13 months old because the day he wants to help might just be the day I stop cooking forever! (maybe not that extreme)

Thank you for giving me a good read this morning!

  3. LOL! I agree 100%, but as a mom of 5 boys, I feel like it's my duty to make sure they can cook. I've been posting weekly meals (sometimes just snacks) that I make with at least one of them being involved. It is work, it does take longer, but I hope eventually they won't have to survive on top ramen because they will know how to cook. With that said...I totally have this same pic ready for my post next week.

    1. That's exactly why I do it too! I don't want them incapable of cooking in the future. But dang, sometimes I just want to wait 5-10 before teaching them. lol

  6. Uhm, TOTALLY! Mine can't talk yet, but she always follows me to the kitchen and loves hanging on my legs. So annoying.

    1. I so remember those days! I don't know which is worse, the clinging on the legs or the wanting to help. I think they both equally suck.

  8. Swinging by from yesterday's link-up... I didn't know how to cook prior to meeting my now Hubby, I have thoroughly enjoyed learning how to cook and bake, but have noticed a tremendous decrease in suck activities since having our second child and now that our first-born is in toddlerhood. It's been a struggle just to consistently get meals on the table for dinner (crock-pot has been my best friend, throw things together in the morning, before the kiddos wake up, and let it to cook all day)! You are not alone! ;)

  9. Bahahahah! That is so funny, I know exactly what you mean! My daughter is obsessed with cooking and while in theory I would love for her to help, it just ends up frustrating me. I have to tell myself all the time that these are the kinds of memories she is going to remember forever, so I continue to let her crack the eggs and dump the flour. ;)

  10. OMFG, I'm dying laughing right now! The post was funny in and of itself, but the cartoon?! OMG. Love this. Licking things. Hahahaha.

I seriously can't imagine what cooking with kids will be like. I'm half excited and half scared for cooking with Benjamin someday when he's older - we can make nice memories, but you know, kids are messy and I hate messes. I can barely stand letting him feed himself, let alone trying to chop and stir and measure!

Thanks for linking up with us!

  11. God cooking with my kid is the hardest thing ever. He likes to pour the stuff which I can handle but he wants to stir or control the speed of the mixer and OMG JUST STOP STIRRING! Cloud of flour in my kitchen....
